Paulette Harris and Alice Pollingue, educational leadership, counseling, and special education, along with five special education students, presented a summary of storytelling projects this past fall at Sue Reynolds Elementary School at a conference in Savannah. The projects focused on Attention Deficit Disorder, Learning Disabilities, and Mental Retardation at the Georgia Council for Exceptional Children. Kristin Casaletto, fine arts, had her work accepted into the 27th Annual Paper in Particular National Juried Show at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. The exhibition runs from Feb. 5-Mar. 5. Paper in Particular showcases the best of contemporary American art in which the artists use paper as a principle element in their work. Michael Bishku, history, anthropology, and philosophy, was selected to serve on a committee to create world history standards for the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence, an organization located in Washington, D.C. Paul Harris, political science, gave a public lecture titled Renaissance of Jewish Life in Germany to more than 200 guests as part of the University of Muenster's lecture series, Immigration and Acculturation in German Society. The lecture was supported by a grant from the ASU Faculty Research and Development Fund, the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and the U.S. State Department. Jurgen Brauer, business administration, recently was named the co-editor of the new online scholarly journal called the Economics of Peace and Security Journal (EPSJ). Hosted in Britain, the first issue of the journal is available free at http://www.epsjournal.org.uk . The journal was officially launched in January at a dinner in honor of Nobel-Laureate Amartya Sen of Harvard University at the annual meeting of the American Economics Association in Boston. The publication raises and debates all issues related to the political economy of personal, communal, national, international, and global peace and security. Joseph Greene, business administration, will be honored at a ceremony celebrating Black History Month on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson County Historical Society Building in Louisville. The Louisville Post Office and the Jefferson County Historic Society will sponsor the event. The United States Postal Service will dedicate the Hattie McDaniel commemorative stamp. Briefs Two new exhibits are now on display in the History Museum. An exhibit commemorating the Arsenal Oak is in the main room. New display cabinets in the artifact room now provide space for a display recognizing and honoring the accomplishments of Minerva Warren, an employee of the Augusta Arsenal during World War II. Ms. Warren was the first woman to be promoted to an important administrative position at the post. In addition, other exhibits trace the development of the campus as an important U.S. arsenal for 127 years, as well as the history of the Summerville and Sand Hills neighborhoods, and the emergence of Augusta State University from its roots in Richmond Academy, the Junior College of Augusta, and Augusta College. ASU women’s golf team was highlighted in a new publication of the Georgia State Golf Association, Golf Georgia! The article, located in the Georgia Field Report section highlights the team’s third consecutive win during the fall season. The Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work recently published Worth and Dignity: Shaping Social Work in Augusta, GA, which was produced jointly with the Augusta unit of the National Association of Social Workers. The publication is the culmination of research performed by students in a Sociology of Aging class, led by associate professor emerita of social work Ernestine Thompson.
