Expert on emergency medicine will be featured at February Cullum Lecture Series

(Photo) Wendy Turner, assistant professor of history, presented A Brief History of Medicine: From Antiquity to the Invention of the Microscope as part of ASU’s Cullum Lecture Series on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The horrific effects of the hurricanes on the Gulf region last year sparked national attention and questioned the effectiveness of prepared disaster plans and strategies. This topic will be addressed by author Richard B. Schwartz, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, when he presents, Dealing with Disasters: A National Training Strategy, as part of ASU’s Cullum Lecture Series during February. His presentation will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in 170 University Hall. Dr. Schwartz is the author of Medical Response to Terrorism: Preparedness and Clinical Practice.

A second author, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter James B. Steele, will focus on healthcare economics and his book, Critical Condition: How Health Care in America Became Big Business and Bad Medicine, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 11:30 a.m. in 170 University Hall. He will also be available to sign copies of his book.

Faculty members from ASU and MCG will address different aspects of healthcare in the remaining February programs, and an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary, Super Size Me, will be shown on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall. It explores America’s obsession with fast food and the associated health risks. It will premiere at Augusta State on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

Below is a list of Cullum programs scheduled for February. For more information, contact Rebecca Rogers at 737-1694 or McKinley Thomas at 737-1468, co-chairs of the Cullum Committee.
