Augusta State University has received more than $100,000 in grants since the Grants Administration and Sponsored Programs Office was developed in August 2005. The director Kimberly Gray, and grants development specialist, Tracey Busbee identify funding sources, help faculty apply for grants, and ensure that all the guidelines for a grant have been followed and completed. “We make sure that all the requirements for a particular grant have been fulfilled,” says Ms. Gray. She says that the organizations that offer the grants narrow the selection process looking for things that would disqualify an applicant. “Every grant application must first go through the institutional approval process,” she says. Ms. Gray says that this ensures the grant application represents ASU and meets the university standards. They are currently developing a database of specific grants available to faculty and staff. Based on information provided to the office by faculty and staff, Ms. Gray or Ms. Busbee will then be able to match those interested with available funding opportunities. Grants have already been awarded in math, computer science, library, conservatory, social work, and chemistry. Recipients and their grants include Synthesis of Selenophene, a preparation of potential anti-microbial agents to Chad Stephens, chemistry; Inquiry Based Learning using the Moore Method to Cornelius Stallmann, mathematics; African-American Male Initiative, a summer bridge program to better prepare African-American males for a successful freshman year in college to Karen Mobley; Georgia Department of Children and Family Services, a training grant to assist social work majors with tuition and books to Kimberly Davies, sociology, criminal justice, and social work; and a grant to purchase a keyboard for the conservatory. The new grants officer was also instrumental in ASU becoming an institutional member of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR). As a member of CUR, students will be able to apply for scholarships as well as receive travel stipends to present their research. It will also enable faculty to apply for grants to mentor undergraduate students, says Ms. Gray. A grant writing workshop will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 2:30 p.m. in E254 Allgood Hall. This will be the first of many presentations by the Ms. Gray and Ms. Busbee. For more information, call Ms. Gray at 729-2327.
