Longtime friend of Ray Charles will highlight Cullum Series in February
Saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, longtime friend of the late Ray Charles, recorded the album, I Remember Brother Ray, which was named Album of the Year in 2005 by JazzWeek. Classics such as Hit the Road Jack are included on the album as well as evergreens like It Had to Be You. The 2005 Instrumentalist of the Year by JazzWeek, Mr. Newman will perform with the Bert Ligon Trio at 7 p.m. in the Maxwell Theatre on Tuesday, Feb. 13. One week prior to Mr. Newman’s concert, the Jae Sinnett Trio will present modern jazz on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Ballroom. Mr. Sinnett’s latest album, The Sinnett Hearings, became the first jazz recording to debut at number one on the national JazzWeek radio charts when it hit the scene in January 2006. He has performed with such greats as Branford and Ellis Marsalis, Chuck Mangione, Herb Ellis, and Mulgrew Millew, among others. The Jae Sinnett Trio features Mr. Sinnett on drums, pianist Allen Farnham, and bassist Terry Burrell. On Feb. 22, ASU’s Wind Ensemble and Orchestra will present a concert at 8 p.m. in the Maxwell Theatre. The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dicky Fallin, temporary instructor of music in the Department of Music, has more than 40 performers. Augusta State’s Orchestra is under the direction of Martin David Jones, associate professor of music in the Department of Music, and consists of music students as well as members of the community. The orchestra will perform several pieces including Gershwin F Major Piano Concerto, IN which Rosalyn Floyd, professor of music in the Department of Music, will be a soloist. The last concert in February will be performed by ASU’s Choir on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m. in the Maxwell Theatre. The choir will include several jazz tunes in their program and is under the direction of William Hobbins, associate professor of music in the Department of Music. The 2007 Cullum Series is supported by the Cullum Foundation, Eugene and Lucille Fleischer, Peter Knox IV, D.Timm’s, and the ASU Foundation. Additional appreciation is extended to Rockie Dinwiddie, the Partridge Inn, Jim Daddies Sound Crew, and the 2007 Cullum Committee. General admission tickets to the Cullum concerts are $5-$10 each or $49 for the entire series through the Department of Continuing Education.
