Monday Night Film Series begins
In a story of a writer living on the edge, Matt Dillon stars in the comedy fac-to-tum, which is based on the novel by Charles Bukowski. He plays a character who risks everything, tries anything, and finds poetry in life’s pleasures and pain. The film will kick off the Monday Night Film Series in February on Monday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

The second film in the series, African film Delwende, will be shown on Monday, Feb. 12, in honor of Black History Month. A winner at the Cannes Film Festival, the film deals with a young woman who is forced into marriage after being raped. It will be shown at ASU at the same time it is being released into theaters.

The World According to Shorts
, a film culled from the best short films to screen internationally in recent years, combines the abstract, absurd, and utterly absorbing in a package of compelling and highly engaging short films. The film will premiere on Monday, Feb. 19. Warning: the last short, an animated film shown in Cinemascope, has some sexuality.

Told as three love stories, each set in a different era, the Chinese film Three Times stars the same actors in all three sections. The New York Times calls the film, “a masterpiece. This is why cinema exists.” Roger Ebert says it is, “wise and heartbreaking. One of the best films of the year.” Three Times is in Mandarin and Taiwanese with English subtitles and will be shown on Monday, Feb. 26.

Funded by student activity fees, all films will be shown at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall. The film series is a semester-long series of Monday night foreign or independent films. Steven Clements, Cree-Walker Distinguished Professor of Communications, is the director of the series. Admission is free. For more information about the Monday Night Film Series, call the Department of Communications and Professional Writing at 706-729-2416.
