Thompson presents Augusta-area economic data
The Hull College of Business presented an economic forecast by its new Cree Walker Professor of Business Administration to area bankers and financial managers on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at a breakfast meeting in the Jaguar Student Activities Center ballroom.
Mark Thompson gave a 20-minute presentation explaining his Augusta-area economic index, data that has until now never been compiled specifically for the CSRA. Local business leaders in attendance expressed excitement at having the data in a timely manner, which will assist them in making both short-term and long-term goals.
“I was pleased about putting together that type of program,” Dr. Thompson says. “My general feeling, from brief conversations, is that they really enjoyed it and that it was very helpful.”
In the past, the economic data available to help businesses and entrepreneurs was more than two years old when it was received. Dr. Thompson’s work updates that data to provide a timely picture of the local economy and a glimpse of what the future could hold. The project is part of a community outreach effort from the Hull College of Business.
“I am extremely pleased with the turnout and reception we received for Dr. Thompson’s presentation,” says Marc Miller, dean of the Hull College of Business. “We are excited about providing this service to the Augusta-area business community, and we hope the index gives business leaders and government officials an invaluable tool that they can use while planning for the future.”
What that future holds could provide some challenges for local businesses. Dr. Thompson’s leading index predicts that growth in the Augusta economy will continue to slow down through the middle of this year. He does not predict a recession, but he indicates that there may be a slight risk of one occurring.
After the presentation, Dr. Thompson answered questions from the crowd for about 10 minutes. Those in attendance were impressed with the index, so much so that Dr. Thompson has already received multiple requests to give the same presentation to civic and business groups across the area.
