Meet the Author
Dr. Ralph Watkins, professor of sociology, will be the featured author at this
month's Meet the Author program on Tuesday, Jan.
27, at noon in Reese Librarys Reese Room on the second floor. Dr. Watkins
will speak about his book chapter, Rap, Religion and
New Realities: The Emergence of a Religious Discourse in Rap Music, which
appears in the book, Noise and Spirit: The Religious
and Spiritual Sensibilities of Rap Music. Admission is free and open to

Winter Gathering of Writers
Jamaican novelist Donna Hemans and Georgia poet Sandra Meek will present a reading
of their works in a free program of the Fourteenth annual Winter Gathering of
Writers Conference on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in E158 Allgood Hall.
Donna Hemans is the author of the 2002 novel, River Woman, which has been nominated
for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. She has received grants from Maryland State
Arts Council, resides in Maryland, and is at work on her second novel.
Sandra Meek is the author of a 2002 book of poetry titled Nomadic Foundations.
Her other publications include a chapter in the book, The Circumference of Arrival,
and poems in Poetry, Shenandoah and Prairie Schooner. She is an associate professor
of English at Berry College. There will be a book signing following the program,
which is free and open to the public. For further information contact Professor

Fair Trade Forum
A forum on fair trade will be held at ASU on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. in
the Butler Lecture Hall. Among the panelists are South Carolina Congressional
Representative Gresham Barrett and Auggie Tantilloare, an American Manufacturing
Trade Action Coalition representative from Washington, D.C. The event is being
