ASU students receive degrees
Nearly 360 students received degrees at graduation ceremonies
on December 13. The fall commencement ceremony marked the 79th year in which
students have been graduated from Augusta State University.
Dr. Wayne Mixon, professor of history, chair of the Department of History and
Anthropology, and ASUs Outstanding Faculty Member for 2003, gave the commencement
address. In his speech, titled Reach High, Don't Quit,
and Don't Be Afraid to Fail, Dr. Mixon gave examples of people in history
who were not afraid to fail before they succeeded. He relayed the message to
ASU graduates, telling them they wouldnt be where they are today if they
werent afraid of failure.
During the ceremony, Dr. Lillie B. Johnson, chair of the Department of Languages,
Literature, and Communications, was recognized as the recipient of ASUs
Distinguished Alumna Award. The award is given to alumni who have achieved a
level of excellence professionally. Dr. Johnson was selected for the award because
of her outstanding performance as a student, faculty member, and department chair.
She was one of the first African American students enrolled at Augusta College
in 1967 and the first African American valedictorian (1971), when she earned
a bachelors degree in English.
