Cullum Lecture Series begins January 13

South Asia

The Cullum Lecture Series will kick off January 13 in the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre with keynote speaker Dr. Robert Goldman.

Dr. Goldman is a professor at the University of California-Berkeley in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Oriental Studies (Sanskrit) at Columbia College in 1964, graduating with the Taraknath Das Prize in Oriental Studies. He received his doctorate in Sanskrit at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971.

Dr. Goldman has authored numerous books on Sanskrit literature and Indian culture with particular emphasis on studies of the great Indian epics. He is the director of and a principal translator in a major ongoing collaborative project on the translation and annotation of the critical edition of the monumental Sanskrit epic the Valmiki Ramayana, a seminal work of Asian civilization.

As the keynote speaker for the first lecture, Dr. Goldman will present The First Poem and the Kingdom of God and Earth and Valmiki Ramayana and the Cultural Universe of Southern Asia.

The Cullum Lecture Series is an inter-disciplinary program that began more than 20 years ago to provide students, faculty, and staff of ASU access to nationally and internationally-known speakers on diverse topics. The semester-long series, supported by the Cullum Foundation of Augusta, ASU, and individual donations provides the campus and the community opportunities to hear experts in a variety of fields, view performances, see films, and tour art exhibits.

This year’s series will also offer speakers on music, art, women’s studies, philosophy, religion, film, political science, geography, and history.
