Cyndy Wilson has recently been named the general manager of Food Services.

The Staff Advisory Council would also like to welcome Sherry Moore, degree program specialist in the College of Business Administration, as one of its newest members.

Robert Parham, dean of the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences, was elected State and Regional State University Representative among the officers of the Academic Advisory Committee in the Arts and Sciences.  

Wendy Turner, history, anthropology, and philosophy, is faculty adviser to the campus chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society. Under her leadership, the chapter received honorable mention for this year’s Best Chapter Award, a national competition.

The Phoenix Magazine, advised by Deborah vanTuyll, languages, literature, and communications, recently won a first place with special merit award in the annual magazine and yearbook competition of the American Scholastic Press Association, an association of high school and college-level student publications. In competition with magazines from colleges and universities around the country, the Phoenix, scored 955 out of 1,000 possible points in the ratings scale and earned perfect scores in the content and organization categories.

Thomas Deering, dean of the College of Education, presented Teaching to the Heart in November at the American Educational Studies Association’s annual convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Randall Miller and Saundra Reinke, political science, and MPA Students Virginia Loveless and April Zahner, presented papers at the Southeastern Conference on Public Administration in Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Miller presented Hit the Bricks Buddy, An Expose on How Reinventing Government Reintroduced the Spoils System; Dr. Reinke presented When Worlds Collide: A Case Study on Ethics and Privatization, a paper on the privatization of the Augusta Youth Development Center; and Ms. Loveless and Ms. Zahner presented The Fight for Environmental Justice: The Case of Taliaferro County. Also, in November, MPA Students Tom Chumbley, Laura Collins, and Dwight Johnson presented papers at the Georgia Political Science Association’s annual conference. Mr. Chumbley’s paper focused on the Taliaferro County landfill controversy and Ms. Collins and Mr. Johnson presented the results of an assessment of Lincoln County’s potential for economic growth.

Angela Morgan, fine arts, has been elected as the vice-chair of Region 7 of the National Association of Schools of Music. Region 7 covers Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Henry Thomas has retired as director of the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre after 30 years of service at the university.

Gordon Eisenman has been named chair of the Department of Teacher Development in the College of Education. Dr. Eisenman had been acting chair since fall semester.
