Chair of Board of Regents visits Augusta State Allan Vigil, chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, made his first visit to Augusta State on Nov. 30, meeting with administrators, faculty, and students before taking part in the dedication ceremony of the Hull College of Business. He also toured campus and observed an international business class taught by Don Howard, associate professor of management, where Regent Vigil had the opportunity to interact with students. The regent plans to visit each of the 35 institutions in the University System during his one-year tenure as chair. Regent Vigil was appointed to the Board of Regents by Gov. Sonny Perdue in August 2003, and he has served as board chair since July 1, 2006. Regent Vigil is president and owner of two Ford dealerships in Morrow and Fayetteville. He has been affiliated with the Ford Motor Company since 1971, when he took a job with the company as a field manager. He is a past chair of the Georgia Automobile Dealers Association, the Metro Atlanta Automobile Dealers Association, and the Ford National Dealer Council. The regent serves on the board of directors of Southern Regional Hospital and the Clayton State University Foundation Board of Trustees. He was named Hispanic Businessman of the Year by the Atlanta Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 1996 and has been named a member of Ford's "One Hundred Club." He also repeatedly has earned Ford's highest honor, the President's Award. Mr. Vigil served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970, including a tour in Vietnam as a first lieutenant. He was awarded a Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal for his actions there.
