History Walk construction begins in July

Construction of the first phase of Augusta State's History Walk will get underway in early July. A contract has been awarded to Construction Perfected, a North Augusta firm, for construction of the walk along Walton Way. A groundbreaking ceremony is being planned to commemorate the event.

The first phase includes construction of the walk along Walton Way. A contract for the second phase, which includes the walk along Arsenal Avenue and Katherine Street, has not been awarded. The second phase of the project also includes the restoration of the historic arsenal guardhouse, and a contract has been awarded to Heavener Construction Company of Augusta for its restoration. The guardhouse will become a museum that will serve as the cornerstone of the history walk, and renovation will begin in August.

The History Walk, a $1.5 million project, includes a decorative brick and wrought iron wall with rest areas and interpretative historic displays that depict the history of ASU, the Augusta Arsenal, and the Summerville and Sandhills districts.

The project is being funded primarily through two Transportation Enhancement Activity grants. Through the efforts of Augusta's representative on the board of the Georgia Department of Transportation, Jimmy Lester, the university received two TEA grants ($700,000 and $500,000). Sen. Don Cheeks was also instrumental in obtaining two state grants, and a funding match was received from the City of Augusta. A private donation from Ann and Clayton Boardman will allow for renovation of the guardhouse.
