Phase II groundbreaking held

groundbreakingGroundbreaking for the Phase II classroom replacement building was held June 7 in front of the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. Guest speakers for the event were Regent J. Timothy Shelnut, Sen. Charles Walker, and Kathy Hamrick, special coordinator for academic and master planning at ASU.

The theme of the groundbreaking was Growing For The Future. Those attending the ceremony received bedding plants and wildflower seeds they could plant at their home.

The building will house the College of Education, the Department of Nursing, the Writing Center, the Telecommunications Center, Computer Services, and Media Services. It will have 29 classrooms, two computer labs, student study areas, a two-story television studio, and a large lobby.

Phase II will be constructed on the site of the parking lot between Reese Library and Walton Way. As part of the $21.7 million project, the Walton Way entrance will be realigned with Fleming Avenue. The main campus entrance and adjoining parking lot will remain closed until the project is completed in 2004.

The contractor for the 112,000-square-foot classroom is Evergreen Construction of Atlanta. Hinman Architectural Group of Augusta is the primary architect for the project in association with Jova/Daniels/Busby of Atlanta.
