Partners in Education panel discussion

A panel presentation on the 1970 Augusta riot titled Rage and Reconciliation in Augusta: 1970 and Beyond was held June 20 from 8 to 10 a.m. in Butler Lecture Hall.

The panel was part of a history and language arts lesson for local youth attending the Partners In Education program at ASU.

Panel discussants included: Roscoe Williams, former dean of students at ASU; Mallory Millender, professor at Paine College who was an Augusta reporter at the time; Grady Abrams, an activist at the time; and area residents who were students at Paine College including James Carter III, George Bailey, and William Fennoy.

“The panel is a way of making what the students are learning in the Partners In Education program relevant to them,” said William Dodd, associate dean of Arts and Sciences for ASU’s University College and chairman of the Partners in Education committee.

“We want the students to realize college is possible for them and can be interesting, and get them excited about the idea of higher education,” he said.
