Sullivan attends ROTC leader's training course
Augusta State Universitys Army ROTC program has got
a new friend on campus.
Dr. Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs, recently returned from
Fort Knox, Ky., where he attended the Leaders Training Course Institutional
Representative Visit.
The visit is designed to allow university personnel from various campuses the
opportunity to observe the instruction and leadership training students are receiving
at Leadership Training camp.
The goal is to make campus influences active supporters of the ROTC program,
said Lt. Col. Dave Freeman, a professor of military science at ASU. Educators
also are able to interact among themselves and with military cadre.
Mission accomplished.
This is a difficult time for this country, Dr. Sullivan said. I
think it is a central role for ASU to help frame young men and women who may
choose a career in the military.
While at Fort Knox, Dr. Sullivan was given the opportunity to engage in several
aspects of cadet training, including wall and rock climbing and traversing a
running stream not exactly his cup of tea, he said.
I chose to stay on the ground, he said laughing. I enjoyed
watching them, although it was disappointing when no one fell.
The camp also helped Dr. Sullivan learn about the training that students who
show an interest in ROTC are put through.
It was equally interesting to watch the students go through the same exercises.
It certainly will allow me to express a more informed point of view when asked
about the program, he said. It was just a wonderful experience.
