Parham named dean of the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Robert Parham

Dr. Robert Parham has been named dean of the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences at Augusta State University, effective July 1.

A native of Takoma Park, Md., Dr. Parham previously served as the head of the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy at Armstrong Atlantic State University. He began his career in higher education as an English faculty member at Francis Marion College in Florence, S.C., where he later became chair of the Department of English and Mass Communications. Receiving various honors throughout his teaching career, Dr. Parham was named the university's 1991 Distinguished Professor of the Year.

Dr. Parham has published more than 500 poems in periodicals and journals, including over 40 this past academic year. His works have appeared in such publications as The Georgia Review, Southern Humanities Review, Harvard Magazine, Christian Science Monitor, The Altanta Review, Southern Poetry Review, New York Quarterly, Hawaii Review, Southwest Review, and Rolling Stone. His collection, What Part Motion Plays in the Equation of Love, was a winner of an annual poetry competition sponsored by the national publisher Palanquin Press. Dr. Parham has received several awards for his poetry including the David Ray Poetry and William Gilmore Simms Poetry Prizes.

He attended Belmont College in Nashville, earning a bachelor's degree in English literature in 1965. He pursued graduate studies at Florida State University, earning master's and doctoral degrees, also in English literature.
