Campus Update

Arsenal Oak
Arsenal Oak

Construction on University Hall is almost complete and some campus offices have already been relocated to the new building. Information Technology Services, Media Services, and the Curriculum Center have already moved in. The $22 million classroom building will also house the College of Education and the Department of Nursing.

The Arsenal Oak, the 240-year-old tree that inspired the university's logo, succumbed to hypoxylon canker - a tree disease likened to cancer - and wood bores earlier this year. The tree, the oldest and largest white oak in Richmond County, was removed Friday, June 18. The oak was commemorated in a brief ceremony Thursday, June 17, at the site.

Some of the tree's wood will be retained for use by the university. However, most will be given to AmericanForests, a nonprofit conservation organization, and its project Historic Trees. The organization will then develop a product for sale that is unique to the history of the wood, with proceeds going to the organization and to the university.

For more Arsenal Oak photos see the photographic review in this month's ASU Report Online.
