He recently published a book, Arms Trade and Economic Development, and has another on the way. He has penned articles and columns for well-known journals and magazines. He has made dozens of presentations in countries such as the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Israel/Palestine, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Australia. The list goes on and on. Because of his extensive contribution to research and scholarship, he was awarded the prestigious Louis K. Bell Research Award. Dr. Brauer, a professor of economics in the College of Business Administration, will continue his research this summer through a research appointment at the University of New South Wales of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra, Australia’s capital. “I had assisted two professors there to publish good chapters in my latest book and helped them in other ways as well,” he says. “They knew my caliber of commitment to quality work and wanted me to come there and conduct research.” While there, Dr. Brauer will work on finishing his next book, Colonizing Military History: A Millennial View on the Economics of War, which is being co-authored by Dr. Hubert van Tuyll, professor of history in the Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy at ASU. He also is planning on conducting research with fellow professors at the academy. Dr. Econ, the name he gives himself on his website, will also keep his monthly column alive while he is away. The columns, which he began in 1991, deal with issues ranging from constitutional economics to the oil industry to Social Security to international trade issues. His most recent column, which was co-authored by MBA student Nicholas Anglewicz, is U.S. Defense Spending Running on $800 Billion a Year. It has been published internationally in the Taiwan News, as well as nationally in the Rutland Herald in Vermont, The Hawk Eye in Iowa, The Augusta Chronicle, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, and online at www.TomPaine.com. Professionally, Dr. Brauer is a fellow of the American Economic Association and Economists for Peace and Security, which he served as vice chair from 1998-2005. He serves as vice chair of the board of Economists Allied for Arms Reduction, an international organization that includes nine economics Nobel-Laureates and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. He is also a fellow with the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society and a member of the academic honor societies of Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi. He has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the United Nations, NATO, the U.S. National Defense University, and the chief economist in the Office of the Comptroller for New York City. In his spare time, Dr. Brauer enjoys photography, traveling, the outdoors, classical music, motorcycling, and scuba diving. His website (www.aug.edu/~sbajmb) features photos of his many underwater and nature trips, many taken with his wife, Roswitha, and their three children, Johnathan, Leon, and Anne. When he’s not conducting research in Australia, Dr. Brauer will put his camera and his scuba diving instructor certification to good use. “I’ve been in touch with a very active scuba club in Canberra, and I plan to travel to Fiji with the club sometime in August,” says Dr. Brauer. “I hope to join the club on weekly dive outings as well.” Dr. Brauer earned a bachelor’s degree from the Free University of Berlin and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame.
