Carter named director of Paris Study Abroad program

Dr. Carter and students
Dr. Holly Carter, assistant professor of sociology, relaxes with ASU students in London during their Classroom Europe Study Abroad program.

When Dr. Holly Carter, assistant professor of sociology, earned her seventh degree this May–this time in French–she accomplished a lifelong goal. What she didn’t know then was just how useful that degree would turn out to be. Dr. Carter was recently named director of the European Council’s Paris Study Abroad program.

“Paris is the second largest program in the European Council group of study abroad programs, and now I’ll be running it from Augusta State,” she says. “I will be in charge of all accommodation issues, the budget, selection of faculty, student and faculty orientation, and all the other responsibilities that make this program run smoothly.”

The European Council is one of four regional councils operating under the auspices of the University System of Georgia’s Council for International Education. Membership in the European Council is open to all USG institutions. Campus representatives at each institution coordinate their own council activities. Each of the council’s five programs–Spain, St. Petersburg, Paris, London, and Southern Germany–has an overall director who coordinates each program for every USG institution. Dr. Carter, who has served as the ASU campus representative, will now oversee the Paris program for the entire University System.

Dr. Carter will also continue her involvement with Classroom Europe–a study abroad program that she developed, which offers students lower costs and shorter stays, often at a much lower price. She has been running the ASU Classroom Europe program for four years. She’ll also continue her work with the new bachelor of social work degree program in the Department of Sociology.

Dr. Carter will train for five weeks in Paris this summer and will begin her duties as director once the training is completed. She expects the transition into her new role to be a little easier because of her extensive background with study abroad programs.

“The way the program runs is not new to me,” she says. “But I will have a lot more responsibilities and that’s a little daunting.”
