Academic departments undergo restructuring
When fall semester begins, students will find changes in the structuring of two academic departments. The reconfiguration is expected to help strengthen efficiencies and effectiveness of the departments. The Department of Languages, Literature, and Communications will become two departments: the Department of English and Foreign Languages and the Department of Communications and Professional Writing. The Department of Fine Arts also becomes two departments: the Department of Art and the Department of Music.
Lillie Johnson, professor of English, will continue to lead the Department of English and Foreign Languages, and James Garvey, professor of English, will become acting chair of the communications and professional writing department. Pam Hayward, associate professor of communications, will become associate chair of the new department.
Both departments will continue to be housed in Allgood Hall, with communications moving into the suite on the first floor now occupied by the Honors Program, which is also being interim chaired by Dr. Garvey.
“I believe that the new units will be in the best interests of the communications, professional writing, language and literature divisions, as well as of benefit to the university. I am especially hopeful about the potential for expanding and improving our capabilities in professional and technical writing and composition in these new departments,” says Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs.
The Department of Art will be moving into Washington Hall, and work is currently underway to convert the building into offices, classrooms, studios, and a gallery. Kristin Casaletto, associate professor of art, will become acting chair of the new department.
“With our ability to provide new facilities for our art program, which will now be remote from the Fine Arts building, it is logical to consider a new administrative structure,” says Dr. Sullivan.
The Department of Music will occupy all of the Fine Arts Center, which is also being renovated to provide a new orchestra practice room. Angela Morgan, chair of the Department of Fine Arts, will serve as chair of the music department.
The administrative changes will allow the university to be more attuned to student and faculty needs, says Frank Butler, vice chancellor for Academics, Faculty, and Student Affairs, Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
