Faculty Profile: Charles Jackson

Charles JacksonCharles Jackson, professor of education, says he never plans to retire from teaching at Augusta State University. The 10-year ASU veteran enjoys teaching and encouraging his students to do their best.

The Pontiac, Mich., native began his career in education almost 30 years ago through a teacher corps program that was developed to address the nation's teacher shortage.

"The program would pay for my master's degree," says Dr. Jackson. He saw this as an opportunity that he couldn't pass up, he says. Later, another opportunity presented itself for Dr. Jackson to get a doctorate in the psychological and social foundations of education.

"I was awarded a minority fellowship, but turned it down. Some of my peers said I was crazy, but I wanted teaching experience," he says. He accepted a position as a graduate research/teaching assistant at the University of Cincinnati to prepare for teaching at the collegiate level.

As a graduate student, his interests were in school desegregation, the impact of race on education, and school reform. He also researched the Cincinnati public school system and how it was desegregated from 1974 to 1988.

After completing his master in education and still living in Ohio, he held two full-time jobs, as a case manager for an orphanage and a public school teacher. As a case manager at the all-boy facility, he helped to transition troubled youth to responsible adulthood.

"I taught them how to look and be responsible adults. I served in two capacities, as a teacher and legal guardian," he says.

While on a regular visit to the school that the boys attended, he was offered a teaching position.

"I went to the school to check on a few of the boys, and while I was there, I was offered a job as a special education teacher because the previous teacher quit," says Dr. Jackson. As a public school teacher, he also taught social studies, history, and American government.

Although education is a major part of Dr. Jackson's life, he enjoys playing chess and tennis. He also says that he is looking for three other people who know how to play double-deck pinochle.
