Partnership creates opportunity for ASU

PeruAugusta State will soon have permanent accommodations for study in Peru through a unique partnership with the Medical College of Georgia and a Peruvian nonprofit agency dedicated to preventing cervical cancer.

"Everything is still in the planning stages. A lot of factors and details still need to be worked out," says Kathy Hamrick, special coordinator for master planning, "but we are very excited about the opportunity."

Dr. Hamrick, Therese Rosier, director of physical plant, and Holly Carter, assistant vice president for international affairs, made a trip to Peru in April to determine the feasibility of ASU participating in the partnership between MCG's Gynecologic Cancer Prevention Center and CerviCusco to build a clinic in Peru.

The proposed building will house a clinic on the first floor and accommodations for medical personnel on the second floor. The construction of a third floor would be funded by Augusta State to house ASU students participating in study abroad.

"If you have accommodations that you own, you eliminate one of the biggest costs for people to study abroad," says Dr. Carter.

The proposed 3,500 square-foot third floor can accommodate 36 students and faculty with six student bedrooms and two faculty bedrooms, according to Ms. Rosier. It will also include six bathrooms and showers, a kitchen, a large common area that can be used for teaching or studying, and computers with internet access.

The building is two blocks from a private university that will allow ASU students to use its facilities. Internet cafes, restaurants, shops, and a park are all nearby, says Ms. Rosier. Construction is currently pending and could begin within the month, she says. Construction is expected to be completed within six months.

"ASU will be paying for furniture and electricity, and we'll be sharing the cost of security and housekeeping with the CerviCusco Foundation," says Dr. Hamrick.

The clinic, which will be managed by a Peruvian doctor, will provide healthcare for the women of Cusco who have had to travel 15 hours by bus to see doctors in Lima.
