As the Career Center’s Professional Practices Manager, Melissa Ziegler is responsible for overseeing the co-op program, internships, and volunteer opportunities for Augusta State students, but this is more than just a job to her.
“My passion is my job. I love what I do,” says Ms. Ziegler.
Although new to ASU with a year under her belt, she is no stranger to higher education. Ms. Ziegler has worked as a Career Counselor at Emory University, a Career Consultant in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia, and as an Assistant Director of Employer Relations at Johns Hopkins University.
Even though she appreciated her experiences at the other institutions, the Jersey girl prefers the small community appeal of Augusta State. “I like the small school feel. I really enjoy working at a smaller school where you can connect with the faculty, staff, and students,” she says.
Making connections is nothing new to the licensed associate professional counselor. She and her boyfriend maintained their six-year, long-distance relationship through her weekend trips to Augusta. Now that the two are in the same town, they are able to spend more time together.
“My boyfriend used to race motorcycles, and I was part of his pit crew,” says Ms. Ziegler. “It may be hard for some people to believe that I can change the tires on a motorcycle,” she adds.
When she is not working as a pit crew member, she likes to exercise and do anything artistic. “I like to paint, create pottery, and take photographs. I also like to travel, especially back to my hometown in New Jersey, but I don’t get to do it very much,” says Ms. Ziegler.
Ms. Ziegler received her bachelor's degrees in psychology and sociology from Susquehanna University and a master’s degree in professional counseling from Georgia State University. She is also a National Certified Counselor and is a member of the Licensed Professional Counselor Association of Georgia, the Georgia Career Development Association, and the Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers.
