Groundbreaking scheduled

Phase IIGroundbreaking for the Phase II classroom replacement building is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 7, in the parking lot behind Reese Library.

The program will feature Regent J. Timothy Shelnut, Sen. Charles Walker, Pres. William A. Bloodworth, Jr., and professor Kathy Hamrick, special assistant to the president for academic and master planning.

The contractor for the 112,000-square-foot building is Evergreen Construction of Atlanta. Hinman Architectural Group of Augusta is the primary architect for the project in association with Jova/Daniels/Busby of Atlanta.

The building will house the College of Education, the Department of Nursing, the Writing Center, the Telecommunications Center, Computer Services, and Media Services. It will have 29 classrooms, two computer labs, student study areas, a two-story television studio, and a large
lobby.

As part of the $21.7 million project, the Walton Way entrance to campus will be realigned with Fleming Avenue, and the six classroom buildings will be demolished.
