New ID cards now available

ID cards

A new, updated ASU identification card is now available for faculty, staff, and students. The older ID system will be replaced for a number of reasons, according to Dan Whitfield, associate vice president for business operations. The new card communicates a modern, progressive image, he says, and it will eventually be used for much more than identification purposes.

A useful feature of the new system will be a “declining balance” option, which means the card could be used as a debit card. Money could be credited to an account and the card can be used in the purchase of books, meals, and other items on campus. Mr. Whitfield explains that the development of this phase is still underway; therefore, the “declining balance” option is not yet available.

The “declining balance” option will provide end use value to faculty, staff, and students and will promote increased use of campus auxiliary services through added convenience of the campus card, says Mr. Whitfield.

New ID cards are currently available through Student Activities. There is a $15 replacement fee for lost or stolen cards. Mr. Whitfield says that over 1,000 new ID cards have already been appropriated in the three weeks since the program began.
Augusta State decided to partner with the Medical College of Georgia, who already has a declining balance system in place. MCG is upgrading their current system and has made a very favorable proposal for cost sharing.

“We’re using MCG’s server, which is a way of moving forward,” Mr. Whitfield says. “We will have less expense by partnering with them.”

The next step will be to test the usage of the ID card. How students, faculty, and staff use the card is very important for the future of the new ID card program. Mr. Whitfield says that in the future the cards may be used for gaining access to buildings, event participation, print/copy management, financial aid disbursements, and more.
“The main thrust is to get a card that can be used all over campus,” he says. “This is a necessary first step, and this system gives us a future platform.”
