POS system streamlines bookstore transactions
|
|
| The new Point of Sales System has recently been installed
in the bookstore. With the new system, purchasing books and other items will take
less time, and the automatic transaction will be more accurate. |
For the ASU bookstore, a point of sales (POS) system is
a dream come true. Employees will no longer have to place price stickers on each
individual item, and they wont have to replace the stickers on each individual
item whenever there is a price change. Ordering books for faculty members would
be as easy as ordering something online, and what used to be complicated by two
different computer systems when students bought books, will now be streamlined
with the POS System.
This system is a huge leap for the bookstore, says Karl Munschy,
director of the bookstore. And its long overdue.
One of the biggest differences will be for students. No more waiting in long
lines to purchase books, and ultimately, transactions will be quicker, Mr. Munschy
says. Instead of a sales associate switching from the cash register to a computer
to look up a students financial aid amount in the Banner program and then
entering the amount in the cash register and finally going back to the computer
to deduct the cost of the books from the financial aid amount, the whole process
can be done on the new POS terminals in one swift transaction.
Its all automatic now, Mr. Munschy says. Customers will
get a charge receipt instead of a handwritten one.
The new system is convenient for bookstore employees as well as customers. Michelle
Neely, textbook manager, will have less trouble when ordering books. Instead
of writing how many textbooks are available down on a piece of paper every time
she has to reorder, the POS System keeps up with the availability of books for
her electronically.
Mr. Munschy says that the new system will be used this month in the inventory
of stock and will be useful in tracking merchandise. There will be no more over-ordering
items, he says.
The POS System will let me know what inventory is selling and not selling,
he says. Its pretty sophisticated stuff, and it is really one of
the best systems for colleges.
