Darren “Dip” Metress, former head men’s basketball coach at Belmont-Abbey College, has been named the fifth head coach in the 39-year history of the men’s basketball program at ASU.

Coach Metress comes to ASU after an eight-year stint at Belmont-Abbey, where he led the team to a 134-103 record, including a 117-66 mark for the last six years.

Off the court, he has been equally successful. Under his guidance, 20 of 21 Belmont-Abbey seniors have graduated or will earn their degrees. He has organized successful basketball camps and was instrumental in developing “Don’t Foul Out” basketball clinics for youths.

Prior to joining Belmont-Abbey, Coach Metress was at ASU from 1989-1995. During those six seasons, he oversaw preseason and postseason workouts, monitored academic progress, and coordinated recruiting efforts under athletic director and former head coach Clint Bryant.

“Dip brings the complete package to the table in terms of running a college basketball program,” says Mr. Bryant. “He knows what it takes to build a winner, and he knows how to create and maintain a winning atmosphere.”

A 1988 graduate of Belmont-Abbey with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Coach Metress earned his master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Augusta College in 1992. He is married to the former Heather Bradford of Lincolnton, Ga., and they have a daughter, Elizabeth Margaret.
