Master of Arts in Teaching Degree
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 2.4 million teachers nationwide will be needed in the next 11 years because of teacher turnover, retirement, and rising student enrollment.
Augusta State's College of Education has joined in the national and state effort to increase the number of teachers through the development of a new Master of Arts in Teaching degree program.
More than 40 students have been accepted into the new program, which is beginning this summer.
"The MAT program is specifically designed for those individuals who have a college degree, but are not certified in a teaching field. They can enroll in the MAT program and obtain a master's degree in teaching and receive certification to teach in the state of Georgia at the same time," says Richard Harrison, associate dean in the College of Education.
The program requires its candidates to have an undergraduate degree in a field related to the discipline in which they are seeking certification. Candidates are also required to pass the state certification exam in that field.
