Employee of the Year
During the Annual Employee Recognition Ceremony on May 4, Hal Rushing was named ASU's Employee of the Year.
"The people in the audience said that the look on my face was priceless. I was shocked," says Mr. Rushing.
Mr. Rushing, a dispatcher in the public safety office, was previously selected by ASU's Staff Council to receive the Staff Excellence Award for summer 2006.
He joined the university in 1996 following his retirement as a sergeant-major in the U.S. Army. Since then, he has seen the dispatch operations grow from two to six dispatchers, and he has ensured that all the police records of each dispatcher are accurate and recorded properly. He prepares weekly and monthly reports that are sent to the Georgia Crime Information Center and assists in conducting background investigations and checking vehicle registrations.
As recipient of the Employee of the Year Award, Mr. Rushing received a plaque from the Staff Council and a check for $1,000 from the ASU Foundation.
"The money is already gone, I stopped by McDonald's," he says, jokingly. "I have some bonds that I will probably invest the money in; the rest will be spent on my lawn mower."
Mr. Rushing will be retiring from ASU, effective July 1.
"I've had a job since I was nine years old. I think it's time now for me to take some time off from working," he says.
Finalists for the Employee of the Year award included Lynda Lotz, biology, and Gina Thurman, student affairs.
