Augusta State will host the championship basketball tournament
of the Peach Belt Conference March 2 - 7 at the Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wrightsboro
Road. The tournament includes competitions in men's and women's basketball, cheerleading
and dance. Twelve institutions will participate, including ASU, Armstrong Atlantic
State University, Clayton College and State University, Columbus State University,
Francis Marion University, Georgia College and State University, Kennesaw State
University, Lander University, University of North Carolina-Pembroke, University
of North Florida, USC-Aiken, and USC Spartanburg. The conference is divided into
two divisions, north and south, with six teams each. The top two seeds from each
division receive a bye in the first round. ASU women are scheduled for play on
Thursday, March 4, at 8 p.m. and the men, on Friday, March 5 at 8 p.m.
Comcast will broadcast the Sunday championship games live for the first time
in the PBC's 14-year history. "Were very excited to be going live
this year," said Marvin Vanover, commissioner of the Peach Belt Conference.
"This is a much more meaningful broadcast for the conference and our member
schools. Going with a live show is a major step forward for us. Having our games
on Sunday afternoon during the biggest week of college basketball will show a
large audience the quality of play in our league and all of Division II."
Sunday's championship games begin at 2 p.m. with women's play; the men's game
begins at 4:30 p.m. The telecast will close out a full week of activities at
the Peach Belt Tournament. All tournament games will be broadcast live over the
internet with full audio and video. Fans can see the internet broadcasts through
ASU's website (www.aug.edu/streams/)
or the PBC's at www.peachbelt.com.
The Peach Belt Conference is one of the premiere conferences in NCAA Division
II
with 12 schools in four states in the Southeast. Peach Belt Conference schools
have won 19 national championships and appeared in 16 national finals.
The conference was founded in 1991 and the 2004 tournament will be the 13th edition.
