Sandhills Writers Conference begins March 18

The 29th annual Sandhills Writers Conference will kick off Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m., in Galloway Hall, with featured speaker Paule Marshall, novelist and recipient of the Guggenheim and McArthur Genius Award.

Other featured authors include Virgil Suarez, Kenneth Robbins, and Judy Goldman. Conference participants will discuss the writer’s craft, and participate in readings, book signings, and a special session called
From Participant to Published Author, which features three former Sandhills participants who have, in recent years, gone on to publishing success: Karin Gillespie, Julie Cannon, and Lorraine Lopez.

On Thursday, March 18, a free reading for the public will be presented featuring singer-songwriter Kate Campbell at 10 p.m., at Le Café du Teau, 1855 Central Ave. Conference Director and ASU Professor of English Tony Kellman, also a poet and novelist, will introduce his new novel,
The Houses of Alphonso, in a 7:45 p.m. free reading with Ms. Goldman on Friday, March 19, in 101 Galloway Hall. An open mic reading by conference participants will be on Friday, March 19, at 10 p.m., 101 Galloway Hall. An awards presentation will begin on Saturday, March 20, at 11:30 a.m., 101 Galloway Hall.

The Sandhills Writers Conference is funded, in part, by the Georgia Council for the Arts, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, the Augusta State University Foundation, the Jean DeWitt Fitz Memorial Fund, the City of Augusta, the Augusta Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, Inc., and the Mary Lu Kuhl Writing Scholarships. Registration for conference participants is required. All readings are free and open to the public.
