National Women's History Week begins March 8

Women's History Month

In recognition of National Women’s History Month, with March 8-12 being designated National Women’s History Week, the Women’s Studies Program will hold several events on campus.

First, the breast cancer documentary
Rachel’s Daughters, will be shown on Monday, March 8, at 7 p.m., in Butler Lecture Hall. The film follows a group of breast cancer activists as they fight the disease and explore the politics and science behind the epidemic.

Next, on Tuesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. in the student conference room at Washington Hall, the Garden City Writers will present
She Speaks II, an evening featuring readings of poetry, biographical essays, and short fiction. There will also be an open mic session.

Louise Shivers, ASU’s writer-in-residence and author of
Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail and The Whistling Woman, will discuss Writing about Women on Wednesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in the student conference room at Washington Hall.

A presentation on
Women and Reading, featuring Dr. Debbie van Tuyll, associate professor of communications, and Ms. Anita Bell, director of the Augusta VA Medical Center Library, will be held on Thursday, March 8, at 7 p.m. in the Reese Room at the Reese Library. Ms. Bell will showcase and discuss her collection of antique photographs, which feature women reading. Dr. van Tuyll will speak about the history of women’s reading habits in the United States. A discussion of Revolution and the Word: The Rise of the Novel in America will also be featured.

Also on Thursday, Continuing Education will cosponsor a Women in Business forum:
Making Your Own Women's History, with UGA Small Business Development Center. Nancy Staton, director of Georgia Women Entrepreneurs Network, Gail Bertucci, financial specialist with Wachovia, and Michael Downs, financial planner with Edward Jones will each present information and ideas pertinent to a woman-owned business. Additional topics include business planning, financing, and networking opportunities. There will also be door prizes. The forum will be held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in 101 Galloway Hall. The cost, including lunch, is $20.
