The Augusta State University physical education/athletic complex building was dedicated in honor of former president George A. Christenberry during a ceremony there Feb. 11.

Nearly 200 people attended the dedication. Guest speaker was Roscoe Williams, former dean of students at ASU.

Christenberry was ASU’s sixth president, serving from 1970 to 1986. Under his leadership, Reese Library was funded and built, several new degree programs were added, and the university obtained the Forest Hills campus and golf course.

Christenberry was also key in obtaining funding for the physical education/athletic complex building.

Christenberry graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science in biology from Furman University in 1936, and received his master and doctoral degrees in botany from the University of North Carolina in 1938 and 1940, respectively.
