Cullum Lecture Series in March will kick off with presentation on health policy

Cullum artHealth policy will be the topic for the first Cullum Lecture Series during the month of March. Michael Bury, emeritus professor of sociology at the University of London, will present two programs on Tuesday, March 7, titled The ‘New’ NHS: Changes in Health Care in Great Britain at 11:30 a.m. and The Expert Patient: Realities and Rhetoric in the British NHS at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

The second Cullum presentation, Healing: the Power of the Patient Physician Relationship, will be given by Peggy J. Wagner, a professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14. She will also present The Patient’s Guide to the Medical Visit that evening at 7 p.m. Both presentations will be held in 170 University Hall.

On Tuesday, March 14, a reception will be held at 2 p.m. at MCG's Greenblatt Library in honor of an art exhibit that celebrates women physicians. The exhibit will be on display from March 8-April 22 at the Greenblatt Library at MCG. On Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall, the film, Wit, will be shown. Starring Emma Thompson and Christopher Lloyd, the film is about a renowned professor who is forced to reassess her life when she is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Also on March 16, a tour of Historical Collections and Archives at the Greenblatt Library will be given at 3 p.m. by Lisa Westrick, Special Collections Librarian at MCG.

Other Cullum presentations for the month of March include The History of Medical Ethics: A Lawyer’s Perspective by Charity Scott, director of the Center for Law at Georgia State University, 11:30 a.m., Medical Ethics: A Journey from Stem Cells to Terri Schiavo by Alan Roberts, director of Ethics Consultation Service at MCG, 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 21; The Ethical Basis of Our Obligations to Elders by Margaret Houck, professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of South Carolina, 7 p.m., Thursday, March 23; and lastly, two presentations by Ines H. Berger, professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at MCG, titled From Alternative to Complementary Medicine: A Societal and Medical Change of Perspective, 11:30 a.m., and “No Pain, No Gain”: The Changing and Challenging World of Pain Complementary Medicine, 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 28. All programs will be held in 170 University Hall.
