Highlighting the conference will be a presentation by Kathleen Baxter. Ms. Baxter is the well-known author of Connecting Boys to Books: Practical Activities and Strategies that Engage Boys in Literacy (Grades 3-8) and The Nonfiction Booktalker column in School Library Journal. She and Marcia Agness Kochell authored GOTCHA!: Nonfiction Booktalks to Get Kids Excited About Reading , and GOTCHA AGAIN!: More Nonfiction Booktalks to Get Kids Excited About Reading . Ms. Baxter has been a guest speaker and presenter at conventions and seminars all over the United States, including IRA conventions and state and national library and media specialist conventions. She has over 30 years' experience as a teacher and librarian. She has taught children's literature classes, served on the 2001 Newbery Committee, and has served on the board of The Five Owls, a quarterly publication devoted to the field of children's literature. This free conference, which is part of the P-16 initiative to improve student academic preparation and success in college, is open to all educators. There will be a number of demonstrations on classroom lesson strategies throughout the day. For more information, call ASU's Office of Teacher Education at 737-1496.
