ASU panelists will explore literacy at PKP Symposium

PKP forum panelists
Panelists (L to R): Debra van Tuyll, associate professor of communications; Kristin Casaletto, associate professor of art; Janice Williams Whiting, professor of art; and Rick Pukis, assistant professor of communications discussed visual and artistic literacy at the Feb. forum.

Information and Computer Literacy will be the focus of the monthly Phi Kappa Phi Symposium on Thursday, March 2, at 2:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

The forum will give listeners an introduction to information literacy and some practical advice on finding and managing information to their best advantage. Panelists for the forum include Camilla Baker, librarian and assistant professor of library science; Jeff Heck, automation librarian and assistant professor of library science; Camilla Reid, associate director of Reese Library and assistant professor of library science; and Thad Jackson, student in the College of Business Administration. Todd Schultz, professor of business administration, will moderate the panel.

“There are basic literacies associated with finding and using information,” says Ms. Reid. “We are bombarded by information via the media, and these literacies are necessary for success in school, work, and life in general.”

People in the workforce or preparing for the workforce cannot function effectively without being familiar with using electronic devices and systems to find and manage information, Ms. Reid adds. “It is extremely important that we find, retrieve, and analyze reliable information we use, whether we realize it or not, to make every decision and choice in our lives.”

The topic is part of a year-long series, Arsenal of Literacies Speaker Series: Reading the World, which explores various literacies that identify a culturally-literate individual.

A second program, to be held toward the end of March will focus on Literacy and the Lost Art of Reading and the program will include Karen Sisk, Writing Center; Beth Pendergraft, teacher education; Cynthia Craig, University College; Paulette Harris, educational leadership, counseling, and special education; and Bill Dodd, academic affairs.
