Sandhills Writers Conference will feature award-winning author

Authors participating in Augusta State’s 30th annual Sandhills Writers Conference March 16-18 will present free public readings.

Award-winning author Sandra Benitez will be the featured speaker at the conference. Her keynote address, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, in 101 Galloway Hall. Ms. Benitez is the author of the highly acclaimed novels, A Place Where the Sea Remembers, Bitter Grounds, The Weight of All Things, and Night of the Radishes. Her numerous awards include the 1998 American Book Award, the Minnesota Book Award, and a 2004 National Hispanic Heritage Award.

Other featured authors include novelists Bill Bonner, Christine H. Deriso, and Terri Dulong; poet and conference director Anthony Kellman; songwriter David Lamotte; literary agent Melissa Flashman; fiction author and screenwriter Eric Miller; and poet and playwright Robert E. Price. Free readings, book signings, and discussions on the writer’s craft in the major literary genres will be held on Thursday, March 16, at 4:45 p.m., and on Friday, March 17, at 4:45 p.m. in 101 Galloway Hall.

Other highlights include a free concert by David Lamotte at Café du Teau on Thursday, March 16, at 9 p.m. Free open-mic readings by participants and members of the public will be presented at 101 Galloway Hall on Friday, March 17, at 9 p.m.

The Sandhills Writers Conference is funded by the Georgia Council for the Arts, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, the ASU Foundation, the Jean DeWitt Fitz Memorial Fund, the City of Augusta and the Augusta Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, Inc., and the Mary Lu Kuhl Writing Scholarships. Registration for conference participants is required.
