Alumni Award winners
Award recipients (L to R): Chris Etterlee, Patrick Sizemore, Joyce Jones, Elaine Clark Smith, and Frank Mulherin.

Joyce Jones, vice president of student services and dean of students, was among the honorees at Augusta State University’s Alumni Association’s annual dinner and awards ceremony on Friday, Feb. 10, at the Marbury Center.

Dr. Jones received the Town and Gown Award, given to a person who connects the university with the community it serves. She volunteers her time speaking at various schools in the community and says she enjoys providing motivational and inspirational speeches to young teens to encourage them to stay in school. She has served as the keynote speaker at several women’s day church events, for the Girl Scouts, Inc., and most recently, at the regional Girls, Inc., annual banquet.

She is co-chair of Augustans Together, an organization which promotes racial unity. She has also been a board member of the Augusta Metro Chamber for the last three years; involved with the Community Trust Initiative; and is also very involved with Leadership Augusta. Dr. Jones was recently invited to join several other boards, including the Lucy Laney Museum Board and the University Health Care Foundation Board. She and her husband Curtis joined the Morris Museum’s Friends of African-American Art Steering committee. Dr. Jones has also served on the Greater Augusta Arts Council Board, and she and her husband have volunteered at the Augusta International Arts Festival and the National Black Arts Festival. She recently joined a social organization that puts service above self—the Augusta Chapter of “The Links.” She is also a member of the Rotary Club of Augusta.

The alumni association also honored other individuals for outstanding service including Chris Etterlee, ’97, ’99, an accountant with Fuller, Frost & Associates, who received the Young Alumnus Award; Frank Mulherin, ’80, general manager of Ivan Allen Company, who received the Golden Key Award; Patrick Sizemore, chairman and chief executive officer of Regent Security, who received the Distinguished Service Award; and Elaine Clark Smith, ’64, chair of the ASU Foundation, who received the Distinguished Alumna Award.

New members were elected to the association’s board of directors, and they include Jessica Zwanziger, ’05; Catherine Nigg, ’03, ’04; Eli Epps, ’05; Eubie Bryant, ’04; Scott Argo, ’04; and Sherry Moore, ’94.

The association also presented the slate of the 2006-2007 board of directors. The slate of officers includes Rhonda Oellerich, ’00, president; Natasha Pratt, ’96, immediate past president; Andrea Turley, ’85, secretary/treasurer; Lynthia Ross, ’03, vice president, awards; Fernando Aviles, ’04, vice president, public relations; Jennifer Hilliard, ’01, vice president, social; Laura Tilt, ’00, ’05, vice president, college relations; Ingrid Etterlee, ’04, vice president, development; and Scott Henson, ’03, vice president, membership.
