Peggy Ruth Geren, educational leadership, counseling, and special education, presented the paper, Ideas, Ideology, and a New Species of Trouble, at the annual meeting of the Southeast Philosophy of Education Society.

Pam Lightsey, JagCard Office, made a recent presentation titled Promotions: Getting your store involved to the Georgia Association of College Stores conference, which was held at St. Simons.

Carolyn Cope, languages, literature, and communications, received a doctoral degree in speech communication and theatre from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Her dissertation topic was The Woman's Aesthetic in Selected Plays of Marie Irene Fornes, Holly Hughes, Marsha Norman, Wendy Wasserstein, and Suzan-Lori Parks.

Philip Morsberger, William S. Morris Eminent Scholar Emeritus, was recognized for his contemporary art by Carnegie Mellon University at an invitational Centennial Exhibition at the university’s Regina Gouger Miller Gallery, which recognized outstanding alumni.

Amy Abbott, psychology, was named Channel 26 News’ Woman of the Week on March 1 during the 6 p.m. news broadcast. She was recognized for her contribution to the community.

Clarence Gavitt and CERT class members

Clarence Gavitt, public safety, received a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certificate and recognition from the Columbia County Board of Commissioners during February. CERT members provide emergency support in times of major disasters.

Patricia A. Perry, Reese Library, was named the recipient of the Renee Rondeau Books Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded by the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work.

Patrick Timmons, history, anthropology, and philosophy, made a presentation titled The Experience and Meaning of Violent Death in Twentieth Century Latin America, at the Latin American Speakers Series, which was held at the University of Toronto, Canada. He also presented Where Law Secures Not Life: Foreign Travelers Perspectives on Punishment in Nineteenth Century Mexico at the Conference of Latin American History which met as part of the American Historical Association's Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Dr. Timmons co-edited with Ethan Blue of the University of Western Australia in Perth a special journal issue of the Radical History Review titled Punishment and Death. It will be published by Duke University Press in Fall 2006.

Cold Turkey posterRick Pukis, languages, literature, and communications, had two of his films, Cold Turkey and Acceleration Nation, screened at the 2006 United States Super 8 Film + Digital Video Festival, held in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The festival, now in its 18th year, features films that have been competitively selected by independent film and videomakers from the United States and around the world.

Rick Pukis, Marsha Loda, and Pamela Hayward, languages, literature, and communications made presentations at the recent Georgia Communication Association conference at Toccoa Falls College. Mr. Pukis presented Communication Labs and Technology; and Dr. Loda and Dr. Hayward presented as part of the Great Ideas for Teaching Speech session. Dr. Loda discussed A Group Project that Works for Intro Courses and Dr, Hayward discussed Mission Possible: Creating a Vision for Business Communication Students. Dr. Hayward, who had been serving as GCA secretary, moved into the vice president's position.

Rob Foster will present a faculty jazz concert on Thursday, March 30, at 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Walton Way Extension. The concert will feature Dr. Foster as well as Armen Boyajain on piano, George Sykes on bass, and Mike West on Drums. For more information on the program, call 737-1453.

Louise Shivers, writer-in-residence at ASU, will be an honored guest at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La., later this month. A play titled Faith’s Affair, written and directed by Jayetta Slawson, is based on Ms. Shivers’s novel Here To Get My Baby Out of Jail. The debut of the play will be part of the celebration of March as Women’s History Month.

News Brief

Phoenix Magazine won first place with special merit award from the Scholastic Press Association. This award is given to university magazines and colleges with more than 2500 students. Debra van Tuyll, languages, literature, and communications, is the advisor.

The Kinesiology and Health Science Department held a Staff Development workshop on Feb. 20 for Health and Physical Education teachers in the Richmond County School District.

The ASU chapter of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will host the 7th Annual Student Research and Fine Arts Conference on Wednesday, March 15, from 12:30-3:15 p.m. More than 60 ASU students will participate in the conference and will cover topics such as the effect of attractiveness on perceptions of sexual harassment, celebrity worship and interest in popular culture, poor communication in the workforce, and factors related to chewing and spitting in eating disorder patients. All sessions will be held in the Science Building. For more information, call the Office of Public Relations and Publications at 737-1444.

Tune in on the first Sunday of the month to hear ASU Reports On Air, our monthly public service broadcast on three Radio One stations. Radio One is the nation’s seventh largest radio broadcast company and the largest serving African-American and urban listeners. On March 5, Anthony Kellman, professor of English and author of Houses of Alphonso and Limestone, will discuss his publications as well as the upcoming Sandhills Writers Conference. The monthly broadcast can be heard at 6 a.m. on WAKB 96.9, at 7 a.m. on WFXA 103.1 (Foxie 103), and at 5 p.m. on WTHB 100.9. Phi Kappa Phi representatives will discuss literacies, specifically information literacy and some practical advice on finding and managing information, on March 19. Where in the World is Holly Carter? Holly Carter, assistant professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work at Augusta State University has been aboard the ship, MV Explorer, as part of a semester at sea program teaching three sociology classes and participating in community service projects.

The study abroad ship departed from Nassau, Bahamas, on Thursday, Jan. 19, and is scheduled return to San Diego on Friday, April 28.
