By Joey Warren
Augusta State has swept the Peach Belt Conference’s Men’s Basketball major awards. The Jaguars won the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and Freshman of the Year awards, the league office announced on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Third-year head coach Dip Metress was tabbed the Peach Belt’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Jaguars to a 22-5 record—the most wins for the program since 2001-02—and to their first PBC regular-season championship since the 1998-99 season. Under Coach Metress, the Jags earned their first national ranking in 30 years and moved up to as high as eighth in the nation last week. Mr. Metress is the first ASU head coach to be named Coach of the Year since Gary Tuell won the award following the 2001-02 season.
Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman, a junior forward from Tignall, Ga., was named the PBC Player of the Year after winning the conference scoring title, leading the Jags with a 20.4 ppg. scoring average and ranking in the top 10 in the league in seven categories.
Ben Madgen, a freshman guard/forward from Williamstown, Australia, was named the PBC Freshman of the Year after leading all freshmen in scoring at 15.7 ppg. and ranking among the conference’s top 10 in scoring, field goal percentage, three-pointers made, three-point percentage and free-throw percentage.
Mr. Bowman and Mr. Madgen were also named to the PBC’s All-Conference team and were joined on the squad by teammate Garret Siler. A sophomore center from Augusta, Mr. Siler currently leads the nation in field goal percentage and ranks eighth in blocks. He also ranked third on the Jaguar squad in scoring behind Mr. Bowman and Mr. Madgen.
The PBC Tournament is being held at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. ASU is slated to play in the quarterfinals of the PBC Tournament on Friday, March 2, at 3 p.m.
