Sandhills Writers Conference
The 32nd annual Sandhills Writers Conference will kick off with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Rick Bragg presenting the keynote address prior to a luncheon on Thursday, March 20, at 11 a.m. in 101 Galloway Hall.
Mr. Bragg, a former national correspondent for The New York Times, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1996. He has won more than 40 journalism awards including the American Society of Newspaper Editor's Distinguished Writing Award.
Later on the 20th, an Open Mic will give audience and conference participants an opportunity to read their own works. This will be held from 4-6 p.m. in Galloway Hall.
Free readings by other conference participants will be held on Friday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall. North Carolina poet Peter Makuck; Atlanta novelist, Phyllis Alesia Perry; and Augusta children’s author Christine Hurley Deriso are among the other writers participating. Also featured will be New York City literary agent Debbie Carter and magazine editor William Garvey. Highlighting the event will be discussions on the writer’s craft in major literary genres, readings, and book signings.
Other highlights include a song lyrics workshop by Augusta singer-songwriter John Kolbeck. Mr. Kolbeck also will perform in concert on Thursday, March 20, at 8 p.m. at Le Chat Noir, which is located at 304 8th Street.
