Staff Profile- Louise Merkel
By Hannah Alattar

Louise MerkelAfter living in seven states and being in administrative education for over 20 years, Lou Merkel has settled happily at Augusta State University.

As the administrative assistant to the vice president for student services and dean of students, Ms. Merkel is responsible for providing assistance to the vice president on any number of matters.

“I love my job,” says Ms. Merkel. “I have the hardest working boss whose leadership skills are stellar.”

Born in Huntington, W.Va., Ms. Merkel had dreams early on of becoming a Rockette. However, after growing up and settling with a family, her focus changed to raising her children. Because her husband’s job required them to move often, Ms. Merkel and her family were always on the go. She has lived in seven states throughout her life.

“I’ve learned something new in every place I have lived,” she says. “I’ve also learned that if you do things with a positive attitude, everything will be ok.”

Also, something very obvious about Ms. Merkel is her love for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. On any given day, you may spot Ms. Merkel sporting the color orange or wearing some sort of insignia representing UT. She loves the school so much, she named her beloved dog, Peyton, after famed UT quarterback Peyton Manning.

In her spare time, Ms. Merkel enjoys spending time with her family, her dog, gardening, participating in church activities, and just enjoying life.
