ASU receives grant
Augusta State University recently received a $75,000 grant from the Lumina Foundation
for Education to implement successful parts of a previously state-funded program
in two predominantly African-American high schools in Augusta. The funding will
be used for weekend workshops throughout the school year and a summer workshop
for students at T.W. Josey Comprehensive and Lucy C. Laney high schools.
The Lumina Grant will allow us to bring students to ASU who may not, in
many cases, plan to attend college, said William Dodd, associate dean of
the Pamplin College of Arts and Science. We hope the experience they have
here, both during classroom visits and during the summer program, will help them
see that a college education is a possibility for them.
The grant is designed to help schools assist students in pursuing higher education.
As organizations on the front line, these grant recipients (ASU) are in
an excellent position to develop, expand, or experiment with new approaches to
improve college access, said Martha Lamkin, president and CEO of Lumina
Foundation, in announcing the grants. We hope these success stories will
inspire other organizations to reach out to
underserved students.
The Lumina Foundation awarded grants totaling $509,200 from its McCabe Fund to
seven organizations across the country, including Augusta State. The McCabe Fund
supports organizations that enable studentsparticularly first-generation
college students, low-income students, and students of colorto gain access
to postsecondary education.
