Take Back the Night

Volunteers work together to place more than 2,000 pinwheels on the lawn between Allgood Hall and the Science Building. Each pinwheel represented a substantiated case of child sexual abuse.

Educating the public and raising awareness of sexual victimization was the focus of the 7th annual Take Back the Night Rally and candlelight march.

More than 2,000 pinwheels outlined the lawn between Allgood Hall and the Science building. Each pinwheel represented a substantiated case of child sexual abuse in the state of Georgia. The Clothesline Project, which featured a visible display of hundreds of T-shirts, represented survivors of sexual victimization, and stretched across campus.

Guest speakers at the rally were Joyce Jones, dean of students; Kim Davies, professor of sociology; and Shauna Fisher Reeves, assistant district attorney. ASU drama students also read poetry and statements from survivors of sexual assault and abuse. There was also a handprint table that allowed participants to leave a visible record of their presence and support on a banner. Participants decorated T-shirts or other items of clothing at a booth that provided decoration supplies. More photos...
