April photographic review

Arsenal Oak

Mike Harris, physical plant (left), helps Scott Merkle, professor at the University of Georgia School of Forestry Resources, collect tissue samples from the Arsenal Oak. Merkle and colleague Hazel Wetzstein, professor in the UGA College of Environmental Resources, took the samples to their lab in Athens where they will attempt to clone the Arsenal Oak by growing genetically identical oak saplings.

"Oaks are difficult to propagate," Wetzstein said, "and it's difficult to tissue culture a tree this old." She said the pair would give it their best try, especially considering the history and meaning that the tree has to ASU. Results of their efforts won't be known for several weeks, and it will take approximately a year to know if the entire process was a success, Merkle said.
