Ms. Uzoma Anadu, a senior political science major, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Grant to study in Belgium during academic year 2004-05. While in Belgium, she will study with Professor Benoit Rihoux at the Catholic University of Louvain and will be researching Belgian economic and tax policy. Ms. Uzoma received one of only five Fulbright scholarships to study in Belgium, according to Dr. Paul Harris, associate professor of political science.

Ms. Anadu's award is the second Fulbright grant awarded to an ASU student in the past two years and third overall for the university.

Mark Lockard, a spring 2002 graduate recently returned from The University of Muenster, Germany. ASU alumna Ms. Carole Anhalt, who is currently teaching at Lakeside High School, also received a Fulbright to study in Guatemala in 1990-1991.

Many members of ASU’s faculty are also Fulbright scholars. They include Walter Evans, professor of English, who studied in France; Steven Weiss, assistant professor of philosophy, who studied in Germany; Michael Bishku, associate professor of history, who studied in Morocco; Mark Fissell, professor of history, who studied in Turkey; and Paul Harris, who also studied in Germany.

The Fulbright Scholarship is the flagship international educational program sponsored by the United States government. Accordingly, the Fulbright Program is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries..." With this goal, the Fulbright Program has provided participants "chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential" with the opportunity to study and teach in each other’s countries, exchange ideas, and develop joint solutions to address shared concerns. Fulbright alumni include Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, governors and senators, ambassadors and artists, prime ministers and heads of state, professors and scientists, Supreme Court Justices, CEOs and more.

According to the Fulbright Program, no other university in the state, with the exception of the major research universities, can claim more Fulbright student scholars than ASU.
