NCATE members impressed with College of Education

Dr. Richard Harrison, acting dean of the College of Education, tells faculty and staff about the preliminary results of the NCATE Site visit. The team’s initial report will arrive in 30 days and an official decision will be made in October. Dr. Harrison said he expects the college to continue to be fully accredited.

The Teacher Education Unit of Augusta State University hosted teams of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC) April 23-28 for the Continuing Accreditation Visit for the Unit and all of the teacher certification programs. NCATE accredits the Unit, and the GAPSC accredits each program. Both accrediting agencies work as a joint team under the NCATE/State Partnership Agreement.

The final results of the visit will not be known until sometime in October, when the Unit Accreditation Board meets. Until then, the process continues with the final report from the visiting team due to the University in early June; and, another thirty days for any responses by the University. Although the official work will not be handed down until October, Dr. Richard Harrison said he expects the results of the visit to be very good.

“What a campus. What great people to work with,” says Richard Harrison, acting dean of the College of Education. “I can honestly say that I cannot imagine working anywhere else. We passed all six standards and we expect to be fully accredited at the Unit level as well as each individual program level. We did well because we have quality programs and this information was evident to the visiting teams.”

The College of Education’s Unit and programs are already NCATE and PSC accredited. This was a Continuing Accreditation Review, a process that takes place every five years for Teacher Education programs.

“I wanted to showcase areas that are often not so evident to visiting teams,” says Dr. Harrison “Instead of placing examples of student work in the document room, I had students do a one-on-one presentation to each team member so that the process of developing the work would be evident as well as give the team members an opportunity to ask questions. This worked so well and the feedback from the Board of Examiners was so positive that I fully expect this process to become the standard in Georgia for all accreditation visits in the future.”
