Lyceum Series presents grammy award-winning group, Chanticleer on May 9

ChanticleerThe internationally-acclaimed ensemble Chanticleer will perform at Augusta State University on Tuesday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Maxwell Theatre as part of the university’s annual Lyceum Series.

A recipient of three Grammy Awards, the 12-man group has been hailed by the New Yorker magazine as “America’s favorite choral ensemble” and praised by the Los Angeles Times for its “luxurious perfection.” Its 2005-06 performance schedule included over 80 concerts in 16 states, a fall tour in Japan, and a seven-country European tour that included concerts in Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, mainland Spain, and three Baltic capitals of Talinn, Vilnius, and Riga.

Last year, the ensemble released its 29th CD, Sounds in Spirit, which followed the 2004 release of How Sweet the Sound: Spirituals and Traditional Gospel Music featuring guest artist Bishop Yvette Flunder. In 2002, the group won two Grammy Awards for Lamentations and Praises, for Classical Best Small Ensemble Performance and Best Classical Contemporary Composition. In 2000 Chanticleer won for Best Small Ensemble performance for its Colors of Love release as well as the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Classical Album.

“This is a very popular group, and we expect a full house” says Kelly Thomas, manager of the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. “While faculty, staff, and students may each obtain one free ticket with a valid ASU ID, they will need to order the ticket in advance and arrive by 7:30 p.m. in order to be guaranteed a seat.”

“I would hate for them to arrive ten minutes before the performance and then be disappointed because the performance was sold out,” he said.

The group has received major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation, the Jordan Family Fund, the Bernard Osher Foundation, and the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund.

Ticket holders should arrive by 7:30 p.m. in order to be guaranteed seating. Tickets are available for $30-$50 plus taxes and fees. Tickets may be ordered by calling 803-278-4849. For more information, call 706-729-2310.
