Spanish professor receives international studies award
Jana Sandarg has a lot to be happy about.
The professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Communications was honored with a Georgia Consortium for International Studies (GCIS) Award, and she was presented the award in March.
The Georgia Consortium for International Studies (GCIS) Inc., is a collaborative partnership of 17 Georgia institutions of higher education whose goal is to promote intercultural understanding and foster faculty development in internationalization. Each year, the organization honors two faculty members—a tenure track assistant professor or instructor and an associate professor or higher level—who have made significant contributions to internationalization at an institution or elsewhere.
“I am so excited because it is the first year they have given the award with a cash prize,” says Dr. Sandarg.
Receiving the GCIS Award isn’t the only good news Dr. Sandarg had in the month of March. She was also named recipient of the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. She then received a Girl Scout award called the “Thanks Badge” for her service as president of the Girl Scout Council.
“I found out about all of these awards in the same week,” Dr. Sandarg explains. “I am still walking on clouds.”
Dr. Sandarg directs the Summer Spain Study Abroad program and has taught at ASU since 1981. She has lived in Bogotá, Colombia, and has traveled to Panama, Spain, Puerto Rico, France, and other countries in Europe.
A member of the Modern Language Association, Dr. Sandarg is also a member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and several other professional organizations. She is the past president of the Foreign Language Association for International Rapport (FLAIR). Dr. Sandarg was named Professor of the Year in 1990 by the Foreign Language Association of Georgia.
She earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
