Alumna Nita Wiggins will be commencement speaker

Nita WigginsMore than 1100 candidates will have their degrees conferred during commencement on Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. in the James Brown Arena. Nita Wiggins, an ‘86 communications graduate who is now a sportscaster with Fox 4 TV in Dallas, will be the commencement speaker.

Through her association with the Dallas Mavericks, Ms. Wiggins arranged for a study abroad experience for Augusta State students in Senegal, West Africa, (where a Mavericks’ coach works with a local academy). In addition to covering the Mavericks, she also covers the Dallas Cowboys and has been on international assignments covering several different sports. She is a licensed USA boxing judge and certified as a basketball referee in Huntington, W.Va.

Ms. Wiggins has also continued her academic pursuit, enrolling in Richland College in Dallas to study French. She will be graduating from this two-year program this month. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for two-year schools. In 1989, she received the Michele Clark Fellowship, a $1,000 fellowship awarded to young, promising minority professionals in television or radio news.
